The American Chestnut Land Trust was founded in 1986 in Calvert County, Maryland. We are concerned with the preservation of farmland, woodlands, and wetlands in a county undergoing rapid development. Our primary interest has been the watersheds of Parkers Creek and Governors Run, however ACLT has assisted others in Calvert County to preserve land for future generations through partnerships, land management agreements, and environmental easements. American Chestnut Land Trust, Inc. was granted tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code on June 16, 1987.

These three Calvert County Parks are peerless examples of the ecological diversity found in Southern Maryland Region. Flag Ponds protects approximately 500 acres of natural area on the Chesapeake Bay from beach to upland. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary protects 100 acres of one of the northernmost stands of baldcypress trees in the United States. Kings Landing protects over 265 acres of natural area on the Patuxent River including 4,000 feet of river shoreline and 50 acres of marshland. Each offers significant opportunities for outdoor learning and compatible recreation.

The Southern Maryland Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America was organized in June of 1958, and was then called the Charles County Chapter. Since that time, the chapter has been continuously involved in most of the important conservation and environmental issues that effect Southern Maryland. We have a long history of offering youths outdoor education and activities through our fishing derbies, hunter education, wildlife food plot, and scholarship programs. Our base of operations was formerly in Hughesville where many members devoted much time and energy to a catering operation in order to raise funds for our chapter projects. In 1990, the chapter purchased a beautiful 141 acre farm in Waldorf that includes approximately 60 acres of the Zekiah and Jordan swamps with the goals of protecting a portion of the swamp and of building the Southern Maryland Outdoor Education Center. In 1998, we sold our facility in Hughesville in order to finance and speed up the development of the outdoor education center. For further information about our chapter and our activities, projects and goals, we invite you to browse through our web page.

The Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust (PTLT) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of agricultural, forested and open space land in the Southern Maryland region. The Trust recognizes that Southern Maryland's natural beauty, rural character and its environmental and historical treasures are a heritage we must protect for future generations. Through the use of conservation easements, land purchases and donations, and the purchase and donation of development rights, the PTLT is working to reduce sprawl and redirect development that is, among other things, decreasing land available for farming and other open space objectives, weakening the permeability of the land, causing siltation in surface waters and diminishing the quality of the area's drinking water, rivers, and of the Chesapeake Bay. The Trust is committed to working with landowners to address individual needs and circumstances in ways that best preserve their land and our common heritage.
