The cliffs which dominate the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay for thirty miles in Calvert County, were formed over 15 million years ago when all of Southern Maryland was covered by a warm, shallow sea. Over 600 species of fossils have been identified from these cliffs, with the teeth of various species of shark as the most abundant fossils. The park is 14 miles south of Prince Frederick on Maryland Routes 2 & 4.[ Last Updated: 20-Jun-2003 | Hits: 2887 | Reader Comments Report Problem

Named after the abundant Blue Flag Iris, this parkland has been set aside by the County to preserve a portion of the natural beauty of the area. There are a variety of trails through the park - a half-mile trail to the beach and a fishing pier - longer trails through the park to two freshwater ponds. The area had been a sheltered harbor, supporting a fishery. One of the fishermen's shanties still remains, housing an exhibit on the Chesapeake's old-time fishing industry. If you take the several trails through the wooded area, you are likely to meet woodchucks, rabbits, and raccoons that inhabit the preserve. You can also see an occasional bald eagle, as well as ducks and other water fowl.

Swimming, picnicking, vending machines, restrooms, walking and jogging trails. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pool also offers many classes to teach your child basic swimming and survival skills. For toddlers and young preschoolers, this will involve introduction to the water environment, and instruction to the parent on how to work with the child in the swimming pool. This course is not designed to "teach" these age groups how to swim, but rather to have safe fun in the water in preparation for future courses. The Intro-Preschool (4-5 yr.) and the Level I class (6 & up) will begin receiving basic instruction on submerging, breath-holding, opening eyes underwater, and supported floating, kicking and arm-stroking methods. In advanced courses (Advanced Preschool, and Levels II through VI) students will perfect skills they have already acquired through previous swimming experience, and learn advanced swimming techniques. All children will be taught basic pool safety rules, and will be made aware of the dangers that exist in and around a swimming area.[ Last Updated: 09-Feb-2013 | Hits: 3261 | Reader Comments Report Problem
