Organizations that monitor and rate non-profit and charitable organizations. Not all charities are good stewards of your money, even if they meet the federal requirements for charitable, non-profit organizations. Be sure to research the charity before giving your hard-earned money. You should also consider giving directly to the charities of your choice and bypassing consolidators such as the United Way. Consolidators reduce the effectiveness of donation by adding yet another layer of management fees and delays in putting your money to work. Some of these consolidators have also been fraught with corruption and fraud as of late (at least it has only been brought to light as of late).

Habitat for Humanity in Charles County, Maryland is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, nondenominational, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual, church, and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Health Share of St. Mary's

Health Share is a non-profit program which identifies low income individuals and families who cannot afford medical care. We seek to provide health care at a very minimal cost to those who are eligible.

Health Share is a joint effort of local St. Mary's County Physicians, St. Mary's Hospital. St. Mary's County Health Department, and St. Mary's County Department of Social Services.

The term Hospice comes from the medieval word for a place of shelter for travelers on a long or difficult journey. Today's Hospice provides care for those who are in the final phase of life's journey in the form of support for terminally ill patients and their families. The entire family is the unit of care.

Hospice of Charles County is supported by gifts and donations and we are a United Way Agency. We depend upon financial contributions from individuals or organizations in the community in order to provide Hospice services in Charles County.

HOSPICE of St. Mary's, Inc. is a not-for-profit service of St. Mary's Hospital that provides physical, psychological and spiritual care and comfort to those who are terminally ill and their families. SMARTCO is a total volunteer non profit organization formed to help citizens in the Tri-County area cross the digital divide. Wednesday evenings from 6 to 10 pm we refurbish surplus computers donated by private industry as well as the Naval Air Test Center and make them available to schools and non profit organizations. We also teach basic computer software and hardware repair courses. No experiance is required to volunteer.
