A loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to many - she could always make you feel special and cherished.
Helena was a life-time resident of St. Mary's County, although she spent time living in Florida, California, Tennessee, and Washington state. She was preceded in death on November 23, 2013 by her loving husband Russell Fenwick. Helena had a personal relationship with the Lord which began when she was a young girl. She graduated from Cardinal Gibbons Institute in Ridge, Maryland under the guidance of the Oblate Sisters of Providence and worshipped at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church throughout her life. Helena loved school and was said to have a lovely singing voice. She worked with the State of Maryland for 25 years, first in childcare and then as a social worker aid. Helena had a vibrant personality. She tended to be forward with her opinions which were always spoken in love. She enjoyed reading, a passion that she passed on to her children. Helena was outgoing and embraced meeting new people. Because of that quality, her circle of friends was constantly expanding. She had many accomplishments; however, when it came to family her potato salad ruled. Helena is survived by her children, Barbara Fleet, Saundra Conley, and Salaam Rahim (Mary) all of Baltimore, MD; Derrik Ballard and Beverly Ballard both of Lexington Park, MD; Angela Matthews (Huston) of Fort Washington, MD; and, Jeffrey Ballard of Clovis, NM; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great- great grandchild; 2 sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Hicks and Edith Inez Corbin; one brother, John Thomas Corbin (Vivian); 2 sister-in-laws, Mary Corbin and Teresa Singleton; 1 brother-in-law, James Fenwick, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers (Jesse, Russell, and Emerson Corbin) and two sisters (Doris Hewlett and Rosie Butler). Helena answered to many names, including Baby, Mommy, MaMom, and Grandma. Although she has ascended to her heavenly home, we will forever hold her close in our hearts.
