Alice Swain Oliver Shipley, after a 16 year battle with Alzheimer's disease passed away quietly on August 1, 2014 at her daughter's home in La Plata, Maryland. Born on August 1, 1923, in Macksburg, Ohio she was the daughter of the late E.V. and Muriel Scarberry Swain. She was one of 14 children.
She married Paul William Oliver, a Navy career man and had three children before coming to Indian Head in 1957. After her divorce from Paul she married Francis M. Shipley, who passed away in 1998. She worked for the Federal Government in Indian Head, Maryland, for 25 years before retiring as an Engineering Technician. She loved her job and made many friends throughout her career. Alice was a loving and caring person who throughout her lifetime spent time giving back to the community. She served as a Brownie Scout Leader in the community and spent much of her time taking part in the distribution of food baskets to the needy. She loved to garden, feed her hummingbirds and bluebirds and traveled extensively. The loves of her life were her children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, due to her disease she never got to know her great-grandchildren, whom she would have loved dearly. She is survived by three sisters Patricia Wilson of Huntington Beach, California, Margaret Gavin of Jacksonville, Florida, Louise Swain of Manassas, Virginia, and a brother Mike Cihy of Senecaville, Ohio. She leaves her children Sam Oliver and his wife Linda of Clinton, Maryland, Paul Oliver and his wife So Lee of Wheaton, Maryland, Cheryl Eastburn and her husband David of La Plata, Maryland, grandchildren David Sidler and his wife Michelle of Atlanta, GA, Amy Eastburn-Gallo and her husband Tom of La Plata, Maryland, Krista Cappelletti and her husband Joe of Frederick, Maryland, Anthony Oliver and his wife Victoria of Waldorf, Maryland , Adam Oliver of Baltimore, Maryland, six great-grandchildren with two on the way and a host of nieces and nephews. Alice was well cared for through the years by her daughter Cheryl, daughter-in-law Linda and wonderful caregivers Claudia Blackwell, Sonia Bradford, Bonnie Swanson R.N., Addie Leonard, Susan Wheeler and Kenly Trigonoplos R.N. to name a few, who were all her "angels". Visitation on Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Avenue La Plata, MD 20646. Following the service interment will take place at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, Maryland. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
