Kennie M. Maxfield, Jr., 83, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away April 2, 2014 at his residence in Mechanicsville, MD. He was born on May 4, 1930 in Washington, D.C. He was the son of the late Kennie M. Maxfield, Sr. and the late Vera Shifflett Maxfield.

Kennie served 13 years in the U.S. Army. After leaving the Army he worked for Coca Cola, Wonder Bread, Railway Express, Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority and retired in 1977.

He was a current member of The American Legion Post #259 Clinton, MD and also served in various positions to include Bowie Post Commander and Charles County Commander. He was also a Member of The Sons of The American Legion, a Life Member of The Elks #2332, The Mechanicsville Moose Lodge, a Member of The 40/8 Veteran's Association, and a Life Member of The Air Force Sergeant's Association.

His favorite pastime was travelling and he also enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and going to the horse races. Kennie and his dad were best friends and companions and were able to enjoy many of these activities together.

Kennie was a devoted husband and companion to his wife and a loving father and grandfather. He loved to sit and reminisce over times past and was always available to lend support to his family when they needed advice or just an ear to listen.

He is survived by his loving wife, Violet C. Maxfield of 37 years; his sons, Kennie M. "Rocky" Maxfield, III (JoAnn), James C. Slaughter (Tina), Robert "Bobby" S. Slaughter (Tammy); his daughters, Bonnie S. Zamaitis (Eddie) and Pamela L. Eddy (Ray); 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends for Kennie's Visitation on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622, with the Funeral Service at 7:00 PM. Pastor Rob McNutt will be officiating. Interment will be at The Maryland Veteran's Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623 at a later date.
