On Sunday, February 17, 2008 a guardian angel took Dorothy Elizabeth (Washington) Brown at the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in La Plata, Maryland to heaven.

She was born on February 20, 1917 in Spring Hill, Charles County, Maryland to the late James Lorenzo and the late Maggie (Simms) Washington. She was baptized May 13, 1917 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Plata, Maryland and worshipped at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church located in Indian Head, Maryland.

Dorothy was married to the late Elwood A. Brown, Sr. and they shared many wonderful moments together. She believed in the Lord and raised her six children Elizabeth Ann (Betty), Mary Christine, Elwood Anderson Jr., Ruby Mae, Wendell Irving (decreased) and William Ronald to trust in God. Her home was one of the gathering places in Woodland Village for lots of children. She was one of the original people to live in Woodland Village back in the 1940's. Dorothy was a parent who helped to raise a village of children. She was fondly called by her grandchildren "Toast Grandma."

In her early days she enjoyed a good conversation about what was happening on the soap operas with her best friend Mrs. Mable Baker but in later years she daily watched the old 1960's TV re-runs which she greatly enjoyed with her roommate and devoted friend Florence Weatherington. Another of her greatest joys was playing cards with her sisters. Dorothy enjoyed her 90th Birthday Day Party with her family and friends. She received plenty of hugs, kisses and well wishes. She was our Queen that day.

She leaves so many beautiful memories for family and friends. There are no words that can capture how dearly Dorothy is loved or how greatly she will be missed by a host of relatives and friends. It is her faith in God that gives us comfort. Her gift of life will continue through her six children, 18 grand children, 30 great grand children, one great-great grand daughter.

Services are Saturday, February 23, 2008, Viewing from 9:00 am until time of Service at 11:00 am at Thornton Funeral Home located at 3439 Livingston Road (State Route #227), Indian Head, Maryland 20640 (301-375-7855) or (301-283-6841).
