![]() Martha Lucille Montgomery Mattingly went to her eternal rest Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at her home in Leonardtown with her beloved family at her side. Lucille was born on July 27, 1927 in Bryantown, Maryland to the late Steven L. Montgomery and the late Adele Burch Montgomery.
She was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County, attending Margaret Brent High School and later worked as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds outside her window at Cedar Lane and always had a pot of coffee ready to "catch up" with her family and friends. Lucille was proud of the fact that she had participated in a study at NIH, while receiving breast cancer treatment for the advancement of breast cancer. Thus the reason for her decision to donate her body back to science to close the circle. On April 1, 1945 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Compton, John Gibbons Mattingly and Martha Lucille Montgomery took their wedding vows and raised a family of five: Lynn Delahay (Ronnie), John, Jr. "Jocks" (Sandy), Pat Reckner (Marc), Zack and Marty (Patty). Lucille was blessed with many grandchildren: Ronnie "Gator" (Michelle) Delahay, Richley (Tracy) Delahay, Cherry (Terry) Delahay, John "Jace" (Cera) Mattingly, Marc Reckner, Jr., Sarah (Josh) Langley, Adair Stewart (Jimmy), Zack, Cody, Alex Mattingly, Gina and Brandon Mattingly. Sixteen great grandchildren: Zachary Griffis, Shawn Riley and Samantha Delahay, Richley, Jr. and Dylan Delahay, Allison and Aleckzander Delahay, Sidera, Caelis and Orien Mattingly, Marc, III and Kayla Reckner, Brady, Will and Noah Langley, and Aidan Stewart. Survivors also include her siblings, Virginia Grove Gatton, Thelma Taylor Watkins, Anne Shotwell, and John Montgomery (Barbara). Lucille was preceded in death by her siblings Louis Montgomery (Alberta), Ellen Mattingly (Francis D.), Ruth Norris Sweeney (Leonard Norris / Tom Sweeney); Brothers-in-law Earl Taylor, Dick Watkins, Frank Shotwell, Elmer Grove, Jessie Gatton; and special friend Ray Allen. A Memorial Mass in Lucille's honor will be celebrated by Father Tom Crowley and Father Brian Sanderfoot on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Compton, MD. A reception will immediately follow at the church hall. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the restoration fund for the Historical Manor House at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 21370 Newtowne Neck Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Arrangements by the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, MD. |
