![]() Samuel Allen Hill, Sr., 76, of Bryans Road, MD. He was born November 30, 1937 in Bushwood, (St. Mary's Co.) MD and passed away February 1, 2014 at home by the river with his loving family by his side.
Son of Joseph Cullins Hill, Sr. and Jessie Elizabeth Hill, Sam was raised in St. Mary's County where he enjoyed fishing and crabbing with his sisters and brother while growing up. He joined the United States Navy and proudly served from 1956–1957. Returning home from serving his country, Sam and his brother shared an apartment in Washington DC. Sam worked at Hogates Restaurant as a waiter where he met the love of his life, Shirley Rickett; she caught his eye quickly with her beautiful smile. Their courtship was a happy one and they married shortly thereafter on December 23, 1960. They made their home in Accokeek, MD where they raised their two children, Samuel Allen Hill, Jr. and Elana Marie Hill (Sherman). Sam worked 31 years as a Local 1458 Millwright, employed by Giant Food in the construction department retiring as a superintendent in 2002. Through his adult life, he enjoyed watching sports, especially the Washington Redskins and the Nationals baseball team. Over the years, he coached many local baseball teams in Accokeek. More than anything, Sam loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he took great pleasure in taking them to their ballgames and sporting events. He taught each of them to fish, crab, and to play cards. Sam got great enjoyment crabbing and fishing the waters of Southern MD as well as spending his summer vacations each year with his family at the ocean in Nags Head, NC. His love for the water was a great one, which inspired him to plan and build his retirement home along the banks of the Potomac River in Bryans Road, MD where he could enjoy the river every day. Sam and Shirley were married 53 years this past December. He is survived by his wife Shirley Hill; his three sisters, Alice Kauffman, Mary Lee Murphy, and Betty Ann Reed and her husband Ervin Reed; his brother John Hill and his wife Joan Hill; his two children, Samuel A. Hill Jr. and his wife Karen, and Elana M Sherman and her husband Glenn; his grandchildren, Christopher L Hill and his wife Julie, Brooke S Hainey and her husband Steven, and Chase Allen Richard Hill; and his great-grandchildren, Pierce Hill and Paige Hill. Visitation will be held on Thursday February 6, 2014 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Raymond Funeral Home, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646 and where services will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be: JC Hill, Barry Hill, Johnny Hill, Brian Rickett, Leonard Rickett, Jr., and Kenny Rickett. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hospice of Charles County, Inc., 2505 Davis Road, Waldorf, MD 20603 and the Accokeek Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 226, Accokeek, MD 20607.
