Bernard Eugene "Smitty" Smith, 89, of Leonardtown, Md. died peacefully January 1, 2014 at Hospice House in Callaway, Md. He was born January 21, 1924 in Martinsburg, Pa. to the late David Elvin Smith and Mary Blanche Ritchey Smith. Smitty graduated from Cove High School.

He married his beloved wife, the late Pauline Rose Smith. They celebrated 61 wonderful years of marriage prior to her death in 2005.

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1949 to his honorable discharge in 1952. Upon his discharge, he began a long career in the dairy and paper industry. He was employed by Leonardtown Dairy as the dairy manager after moving from Altoona, PA, he later worked at Excello Corporation and Westvaco Corporation as an equipment technician. After his retirement, he worked for the Brinsfield Funeral Home for 10 years. He was an active member of St. Aloysius Church.

His greatest joy was his family. He especially enjoyed watching his great grandchildren compete in sports and would frequently attend several games on the same day. He enjoyed boating and skiing behind the old Green Hornet and spent many days on Breton Bay.

Smitty is survived by his daughter, Denise M. Mattingtly (Tom) of Leonardtown, Md.; two grandchildren, Tommy and Todd Mattingly and 4 great grandchildren, Cameron, Lexi, Hunter and Kaylee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pauline Rose Smith, and his siblings, Douglas Smith, Edward Smith, and Marjorie Smith Spotts.

Family will receive friends for Smitty's Life Celebration on Monday, January 6, 2014 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM, with prayers recited at 7:00 PM. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. David Beaubien at 10:00 AM at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 22800 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650 on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, Md.
