![]() Charles (Charlie) Esker Nixon of California, Maryland died on November 10, 2013 at the age of 93 at Charlotte Hall Veterans' Home in Charlotte Hall Maryland.
Mr. Nixon was born in 1920 in Surry County, North Carolina to Nathaniel Esker Nixon and Bertha Elizabeth Denny Nixon, the 2nd of 7 children. He grew up farming and learning the trade of a carpenter and to play country music. In 1938 he left the farm to join the Army-Air Corp. In the Air Corp he was trained as a flight navigator and gunner. He was honorably discharged from service at the end of World War II. After being discharged, Mr. Nixon moved to Washington DC to work as a carpenter. Thanks to his love of country music and his ability to play the guitar, Mr. Nixon played at various church socials and square dances. At one of these church square dances he met the love of his live, Ethel Yocum. Within the year (1947) they were married and eventually moved to Arlington, Virginia where they had two children, Dwight Charles and Jean Louise. In 1953, Mr. Nixon and his family moved to their permanent home in Clinton Maryland. In 1959 their 3rd child was born, Karen Lee. Mr. and Mrs. Nixon were active members of Bells United Methodist Church, then Grace Brethren Church of Temple Hills. Mr. Nixon worked for J. A. Sheibel Construction as a master carpenter. This home also saw a steady stream of animals, various dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, and even a pony thanks to Mr. Nixon's love of animals. Mr. Nixon also planted a garden every summer and enjoyed giving away the fruits of his labors to friends at church and work. Mr. Nixon loved to work with his hands - gardening, building tractors, trailers, backyard toys, mini bikes and furniture. He loved gadgets of all kinds. He loved to hunt and fish. But his favorite pastime was being with his family. When his grandsons came along, he was in heaven on earth spending as much time with them as he possibly could. In 1995, his beloved wife, Ethel, passed away and in 2002, Mr. Nixon moved to California, Maryland to be nearer to his daughter Karen. Mr. Nixon is survived by his three children, Dwight Charles Nixon (Elaine), Jean Nixon, and Karen Nixon Poe (Danny), four grandsons, Daniel E. Poe II (Maggie), Christopher Poe, Andrew Poe and Scott Gowers, 2 great grandsons, Alex and Alan Gowers, his brother Mack Nixon and sister Mary Thompson along with many nieces and nephews. Mr. Nixon is preceded in death by four of his siblings: Polly Hancock, Sally Wade, Ray and Robert Nixon. Arrangements provided by Brinsfield Funeral Home. |
