James Terrence Butler was born on July 6, 1952 in Washington, DC to the late Joseph Earl and Mary Elsie Butler. On Thursday, September 12, 2013 "Terry", as he was affectionately known, was called to his heavenly home.

James grew up in Charles County and was educated in the Charles County Public School System. He was employed by Charles County Public Schools for 27 years until his retirement in February 2002.

James always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved watching football and basketball and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. He loved working in his yard and cooking on the grill for family and friends. He was also a member of the WAC Hughes Lodge 1053 in Newburg, MD for 19 years.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his daughter Tameka Montgomery; grand-daughter Amari Montgomery; sisters Mary Edelen, Audrey Cutchember, and Margaret Butler; and brothers Joseph and Ralph Butler.

James leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Cynthia Butler; daughter Tawan Butler and fiancé Clayton; sons Antwon Butler and wife Emeka, Jamal Chase and wife Cherise, and Brandon Butler; son-in-law Jerome Montgomery; grandchildren Micah Montgomery and Noelle Duckett; sister Debora Price; brothers Leo, Dale, and Thomas Butler; sister-in-law Mary Butler; aunts Agnes Yates and husband Joseph, Betty Barnes and husband James, and Lelia Hicks; and uncle Leo Butler. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. James had a special place in his heart for his niece Margaret "Penny" Smith and his nephew James "Jimmy" Butler.

Friends received on Friday, September 20, 2013 from 8AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Plata, MD. Interment to follow at the church cemetery.
