Sidney "Sid" Elmore Sorrels of Mechanicsville, MD. Born in Carlisle, Mississippi on August 19,1908. After High School Sid took up training at Jackson, MS to be a printer, over the years he became very efficient in all phases of the trade, including proof reading. In training, he specialized in Monotype machinery and key boarding which took the place of setting type by hand.

In 1939 he served a short stint in the Labor Dept. before being offered a position at the Government Printing Offices. In 1943, he left the GPO to serve in the United States Navy in WWII. He was slatted for overseas duty, but stopped at NY Receiving Station to be a Navy Printer. He later was placed in charge of printing there, aboard the USS Seattle. In 1946 he was honorably discharged, and went back to work at GPO.

He worked from 1951 to 1955for NSA and retired from GPO in 1969. A member of AARP since 1970 serving 2 terms as treasurer for the St. Mary's County Chapter, a life member of NARFE, DAV and member of the American Legion an the International Typographical Union for over 70 years. He was a very active member during his working years, having served in a number of elected and appointed official positions, including chairman of a GPO Chapel for a number of years. He is a member of the Living Word Community Church, Mechanicsville, MD. He loved music, his hobby and played with several band groups in the radio days, such as the "Harmony Boys", Cleve Bass Breakdown Band and Hawaiian Serenaders, Over the Hill Gang was the last group. Most of them lived in the Golden Beach area of St. Mary's County, they played primarily in Southern MD an Virginia and to entertain mostly senior 's and disabled citizens and veterans. However they did go on a good-will trip to Romania in 1981 for a 2 week engagement.

Mr. Sorrels is survived by his wife Helen E. Sorrels, children; Gregory Viands, Donald Sorrels, Thomas Sorrels and Lenora Giles, sisters; Kathleen Harmon and Virginia Seawright, also survived by 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to a Life Celebration on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm in the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., Charlotte Hall, MD.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 12PM in the Living Word Community Church with Pastor James Wickham officiating. Interment to follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD Memorial contributions may be made to Living Word Community Church, 39371 Harpers Corner Rd, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.
