James was a long-time auto mechanic with B&J Auto Parts based in Brentwood, MD and a member of Holy Face Catholic Church in Great Mills, MD. He was known as a helper to all in need, always about fixing mechanical things, and working with his hands. He enjoyed fishing and most of all being around family and friends.

Son of the late Robert Leonard Smith Sr. and the late Frances Alberta Jordan Smith. Also predeceased by a sister, Mary Agnes Smith.

He is survived by four brothers, Robert L. Smith Jr. and his wife Maria of Great Mills, MD, Francis M. Smith of Callaway, MD, Patrick C. Smith of Hyattsville, MD, and Philip A. Smith of Callaway, MD; and two sisters, Patricia A. Smith and Marilyn V. Smith, both of Callaway, MD.
