![]() John Groff, age 76, of Waldorf, MD died peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 surrounded by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen and three daughters, Kate Susanne Groff, Heidi Elizabeth Groff, and Gretchen Ann Groff. He is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Schultz and Nancy Pavelchik; and a brother, James Groff, all of Milwaukee.
John was born December 24, 1936 in Milwaukee. He attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1961 with a dual major in Applied Mathematics and Chemistry. John went on to complete his master's degree in Applied Mathematics from Marquette University in 1963. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground and continued post graduate doctoral studies in Applied Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, University of Delaware, Johns Hopkins University and Drexel University. John's most notable professional achievements include the design and development of the fire control systems for the M1 Abrams and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. During his career, he served the Department of Defense for over 50 years and also worked for United Defense Corporation. John loved gardening, carpentry, and military history. He had a strong passion for classical music and helped instill an appreciation for it in all his daughters. John was known for his hospitality and warmth. To commemorate his love of entertaining, friends and family are invited to attend a memorial celebration of John's life on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the family home in Waldorf, MD from 1-5PM.
