Ray Velasquez, 88, of Lusby, MD, formerly of Ft. Washington, MD died in Lusby on March 3, 2013. He was born in Penuelas, Puerto Rico in 1925 to the late Antonio and Carmen Echavarria Velasquez.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He received his undergraduate education at New York University, attended American University and completed his law degree at the University of Baltimore Law School in 1963. His professional memberships included the Prince George's County Bar and the Maryland, American and Inter-American Bar Associations. He was a member of several political clubs, citizen and civic organizations and served on three parent-teacher associations. He had attended Hillcrest Baptist Church and Ft. Washington Baptist Church. Ray had worked for the New York City Department of Public Welfare and the District of Columbia Public Library. His most recent employment had been his own general law practice, from which he retired in 1984. Ray enjoyed many outdoor activities including crabbing, camping and hiking. He was a fan of the Baltimore and Washington sports teams. Ray is survived by his son John Velasquez of Kent Island, MD; daughters, Deanna Jones and her husband, Percy of LaPlata, MD; Susan McKenzie and her husband Rick of Lusby, MD and Sheila Magoon and her husband Steve of Wakefield, MA; brothers, Porfirio and Epifano Velasquez and sisters Cruzita Watson and Filomena DeJesus; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
