Lorena Mary Hauser, 101, of Charlotte Hall, MD, a former Philadelphia radio singer in the 1930s, died January 18, 2013 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Lorena, who was also a dancer, spent much of her life as a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family and assisted her husband in his Bladensburg, MD service station business.

As a young woman in the 1930s, Lorena was a popular Philadelphia radio show and stage performer, singing ballads and love songs that would now be called, "the oldies." Her unique style, known as crooning, was the style of the day. Lorena sang, strumming her familiar taropatch-ukulele, often to the accompaniment of her live audiences. Her entertaining ways spanned the years from WWII war bond drives, to school benefits, to Lions' Club benefits, to Maryland Senior Idol.

Lorena's talent and attraction lasted until the end of her life as she sang, in her later years, before others at adult day care centers in Ocean City, MD, and in La Plata, MD, and, more recently, before veterans and other fellow residents in the Veterans Home. Local newspaper articles about Lorena chronicled her entertaining abilities, including an article that appeared in southern Maryland's, Maryland Independent, on Sept. 21, 2011, when Lorena reached her 100-year milestone.

Born September 2, 1911 in Philadelphia, PA, Lorena was the daughter of Harry R. Potts and Isabella Kane Potts of Philadelphia.

Her husband, Nathaniel W. Hauser, Sr., and brother, Harry Potts, predeceased her.

She is survived by her five children, Nathaniel W. Hauser, Jr. (Doris Anne), Lorena Belle Christian (Walter), Jack C. Hauser (Diana), Katherine H. Whitford (Gerald) and Frieda M. Romanchuk (Daniel), 12 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends for Lorena's Life Celebration on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 2:00 - 4:00p.m., and 6:00 - 8:00p.m., at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD. A Funeral Service will be held at 7:00p.m. Interment will take place at a later date at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Hospice. P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650, to Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, 29449 Charlotte Hall Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD 20622, or to Charles County Senior Center Plus, 8190 Port Tobacco Rd., Port Tobacco, MD 20677.
