Francine McKinnon Vann Wimms, 83, of Lexington Park, MD died October 4, 2006 in St. Mary's Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.
Born June 5, 1923 in Valdosta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Eula Lee Warren McKinnon and the late Arthur McKinnon. Francine was the oldest of seven sisters and brothers. She survived all of her siblings. She attended South Street Elementary School and Dasher High School, both in Valdosta, GA. She never lost her love for learning and became a self educated business woman. Francine came to Maryland from Georgia in 1941. She loved cooking, often preparing large meals for her family and friends. Her passion was gardening, and she was often seen in her vegetable and flower garden. Francine was the first African-American woman and the first woman to become a chief custodian in Maryland Public Schools. She retired in June 1993. She was predeceased by her first husband, James H. Vann, Sr., her second husband, Harry E. Wimms and her son, Robert M. Vann, Sr. Francine is survived by five children, Loretta B. Barnwell of Stevenson Ranch, CA, Dorothy L. Lewis (James) of Baltimore, MD, Barbara Jean Roquemore of Lexington Park, MD, James H. Vann, Jr. of Milledgeville, GA and Harriette E. Wimms (Patricia) of Baltimore, MD. Francine also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She was much loved and will be truly missed by a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. until 12 Noon in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Lexington Park, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon. The Reverend Mike Dolan will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
