![]() Horace Purvis Johnson, Jr. was born November 13, 1956 in Brooklyn, New York to Zora Mae and the late Horace Purvis Johnson, Sr. On Monday, August 27, 2012, at the Civista Medical Center, Horace suddenly departed this earthly life.
Horace was educated in the District of Columbia school system and graduated from F.W. Ballou High School. On November 22, 1977 he entered the United States Marine Corps where he received the Marine Corps Achievement Medal; the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; Meritorious Mast (4th Award); Good Conduct Medal (7th Award); National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2nd Award); Marine Corps Expidetionary Meda; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Letter of Appreciation (2nd Award); Rifle Badge Expert (5th Award); Pistol Badge Expert (3rd Award) and many other types of recognition during his years of service. After 22 years of dedicated service to his country, Horace retired to the civilian life. Upon retirement, he began a new career with COX Communications where he was employed as a Field Network Tech III until the time of his death. Horace met the love of his life, Delphine, on a blind date and they were joined in holy matrimony on January 24, 1982. From that union three children were born, Horace Purvis Johnson III, Denoris Joel Johnson and Adrian Pierre Johnson. He was very proud of his three boys. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was one of the greatest enjoyments in his life. Horace was a loving, caring, generous and funny person who was devoted to family. His most admirable trait was his smile. Horace's words of wisdom to his wife were "we are going to grow old together." He enjoyed family gatherings such as reunions and cookouts. Horace was an avid Redskins fan and wouldn't miss a game. He also liked bowling, playing cards, singing Motown music and traveling; and he loved studying and learning the Bible. In addition to his father, Horace, Sr., he was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Kevin Johnson. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife, Delphine; sons, Horace Purvis III, Denoris Joel and Adrian Pierre Johnson; grandchildren, Dakota James Johnson, Aidan Thomas Johnson, and Kaitlyn Elizabeth Johnson; daughters-in-law, Virginia Johnson and Santana Johnson; mother, Zora Mae Johnson; sister, Rosemary Sicart; stepfather, Allen Johnson; sisters-in-law, Ethel Simmons, Betty Green, Rochelle Gibson and Saundra Bullock Johnson; brothers-in-law, Herva Sicart and Christopher Simmons; aunts, great aunts, Vera Battle and Essie Purvis Callier; nephews, Otis Johnson and Kevin Barnes and a host of great uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews of the Ficklings, Purvis, Johnson and Simmons family. His services will be held in the Thornton Funeral Home, P.A. Chapel, 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640 on Saturday, September 1, 2012. Viewing at 12:00 noon and service at 1:00 pm. Interment will be Friday, September 7, 2012 at 11:00 am, Maryland Veteran Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland. Arrangements provided by Thornton Funeral Home. |
