![]() Harry E. Yaukey, Sr. 81, of Newburg, MD, passed away on April 12th at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the son of the late Myra Loleta Reeder and the late Charles Franklin Reeder. Harry was born in Chambersburg, PA on September 9, 1930.
He is survived by his brother, Paul Yaukey of Chambersburg, PA; his children, Gene Yaukey, Jr., John Yaukey, Mary Pryor and Myra Hardesty and her husband Bill; his step-son, Christopher W. Swann; his grandchildren, Christina Ann Pryor, Laurie Marie Humphrys, John Russell Pryor, Kayla Faith Thompson, Justis Hardesty, and MyLee Rose Hardesty; and 6 great grandchildren. Harry enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1949. He earned final rank of staff sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1954. He was a Maryland State Trooper from 1958 until he was injured on duty in 1975. Harry coached and managed Little League & Babe Ruth baseball for Charles County from 1972 until 1978. He held three championship teams during this time. Harry was extremely active for the cause of Veterans since his active duty in the Marine Corps. He served as State Commandant for the Marine Corps League in 1983 until 1986. He was responsible for starting the Dept. Marine of the Year program and consequently earned this honor twice. Once in 1981-1982 and again in 1989-1990. He was instrumental in the Marine Corps Detachment Middle School Scholarship Program across the county middle schools. Harry was elected Commander of the DAV MD Chapter in 1994-1995. Serving as Commander of the local DAV La Plata Chapter for two terms in 1991-1992. He served as Amvets Dept of MD VAVS Service Officer for over 20 years at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. He was elected Veteran of the year in 1993 by the Joint Veterans Committee. He had the distinct honor of receiving Certificate of Honorary Membership to the Chapel of Four Chaplains in Philadelphia, PA. Harry was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge St. Columbia Lodge in La Plata, MD. He served over 20 volunteer organizations faithfully until his sickness in February. Family will receive friends for a Life Celebration on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. There will be a Masonic Service on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 12NOON, here at Brinsfield-Echols. Interment will follow to Maryland Veteran Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623.
