Jack Gelrud, 89 of Lexington Park died on February 23, 2012 at his residence. He was born on July 23, 1922 in Baltimore.
Jack moved to Lexington Park in 1947 to open the first Rexall Drug Store in St. Mary's county. He was a leader in the community and a founding father of the Beth Israel Synagogue. He was also involved in numerous charities throughout the years. He is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Dr. Louis Gelrud (Eddy), Steve Gelrud (Jo-Ann), Gary Gelrud, Beth Gelrud (Lewis), Paul Gelrud (Joan), Lee Goldman (Lisa), and Jay Goldman (Sandi); 17 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and his sister, Irene Schwartz. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Rachel Kitt Gelrud and his sister, Pauline Sherman. Jack served as a medic with the 10th Mountain Division in World War II and was awarded a silver star, three bronze stars and two purple hearts. Jack will be missed not only by his family, but also by the entire St. Mary's County community. His funeral service will take place on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery on Chancellors Run Road, Great Mills, Maryland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Three Oaks Center, P.O.
