![]() Mr. Henry Upsher Langford III, son of the late Henry and Zola Langford, was born in Marion, Maryland on February 25, 1925, and quietly departed this life on March 15, 2007 at the Charles County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in La Plata, Maryland.
Henry, affectionately known as Lang or H.U., attended public schools in Marion, Maryland and attended college for a short time at Storer College in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. In 1943 he met his wife of 61 years, Elvira Clark Langford. From this union their only child, Patricia, was born. On April 22, 1946, Henry was honorably discharged from the United States Army where he served during World War II. He later retired from Fort McNair in Washington, D.C., after many years of dedicated federal service. As a child, Henry was a member of Handy Memorial M.E. Church in Marion, Maryland. He later became an active member of the Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Pomonkey, Maryland where he was a member of the Metropolitan United Methodist Men and was recently honored as a lifetime member. His service included treasurer, delivering fruit, and providing transportation to senior citizens. Henry was a faithful worker with the NAACP for many years where he served on the fund raising committee. He was inducted into the Charles County Branch of the NAACP Hall of Fame in 1996 for his commitment, leadership, and dedication to the community. He was also a member of the Randolph Furey Post #170 of the American Legion for many years. He enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, playing horseshoes, playing cards with family and friends, and cheering for the Redskins. Henry was a faithful husband and a loving father. Most importantly, he had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and enjoyed daily devotions with his wife. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his sister, Velma Stokley and his sister-in-law, Sophonia Gaston. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Elvira Langford, daughter, Patricia Plummer, five sisters-in-law, Jeanette Thurmond, Winifred Sechrest, Edna Clark, Phelicia Boyer, and Willa Mae Parker, six brothers-in-law, Lennie Thurmond, John Sechrest, James Clark, Jr., Ralph L. Boyer, William L. Gaston, and Arnold Parker, 11 nephews, 12 nieces, and a host of cousins, family members, and friends. His viewing will take place on Wednesday, March 21st, 9:00a.m. until service time, 11:00a.m. at Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 3385 Metropolitan Church Road (Pomonkey) Indian Head, Maryland.
