Luther A. "Lou" Welch, 68, died March 13, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Born July 4, 1938 in Pomonkey, Maryland, he lived his entire life in Bryans Road. He is well known throughout the community as a baseball player for the American Legion. Luther devoted 50 yrs of his life to the youth of our community through service to the Boy Scouts of America. He was active in pack 415 and troupes 1321 and 1709. He served as Scoutmaster, commissioner, trainer, and mentor. He received the District Award of Merit, The Silver Beaver Award, The Jane M. Smith award, Wood Badge Beads, and was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow.

He worked for the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head where he retired in 1993 after almost 34 years of service. He proudly served in the Army National Guard as a Sergeant First Class where he received the Army Achievement Medal in June of 1983. After retirement, Lou devoted his time to his community. Luther was a founding father of the Johnny Unitas Football Foundation. He also devoted a lot of time to the Little League Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Dyson and Evelyn Welch, one brother, Allan "Sonny" Welch, and two sisters, Evelyn "Dee" Horne and Janet Bowie. He is survived by two sisters, Gloria Pace of Bryans Road and Dorothy Bladen of Jacksonville, Florida. Although he never married nor had children of his own, Lou was a second father and grandfather to his nieces, nephews, and their children. He assisted in the raising of his niece, Deborah A. Hall Bowie of Bryans Road and was known as "Uncle Lou" to all.

Viewing will be held Friday, March 16, 2007 at Williams Funeral Home in Indian Head from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bryans Road at 10:00 a.m. Luther will then be laid to rest at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf. Pallbearers will be Bill Bowie, Don Williams, Edward Dean Pace, Brian Sweigart, Michael Howell, and Kenneth Bowie. Honorary Pallbearers will be great-great nephews, Dylan Sweigart, and Kameron Case.
