Edward "Ed" Alexander Schauf, 66, of Dameron, MD died on August 18, 2011 at the Hospice House of St. Mary's. Born July 24, 1945 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Edward Daniel Schauf and Caroline Hommel Schauf.

Ed was an excellent student and had unique hobbies; as a young boy, he raised and raced award winning pigeons. Upon graduating from Central High School, Ed enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves and served from 1963 - 69. Ed was a dedicated Police Officer with the Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD). After his 18 year career with PGPD, Ed continued his law enforcement career at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission as the Deputy Chief of Criminal Investigations for an additional 15 years. In 1977, Ed started as a part-time professor teaching Criminal Justice curriculum to the students at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). Upon retiring from his law enforcement career, Ed focused his full-time attention on the Criminal Justice course-work at CSM. He became one of the founders of the Department of Public Safety and served as the Head of that department.

Alongside his wife, Ed served on the Board of Trustee's for the St. Mary's County Nursing Center. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association for Prince George's County, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a member of the Solomons United Methodist Church, Solomons, MD. Ed was an inspiring individual whose passion for teaching touched the minds of thousands of students. Ed was a dedicated family man and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He loved travelling with his wife to various locations across the globe and sharing his experiences with family and friends.

Ed was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Schauf; children, Ryan Steven Schauf (Amber) and Melanie Schauf Herms (Sascha); aunt, Muriel Spanholtz; brother, Daniel Schauf (Cheri); sisters, June Jones (Norman), Virginia Settle, Barbara Calvo (Joe) and Peggy Settle (Bill); grandchildren Sandor, Kieran, Eric, Shana and many other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends for Ed's Life Celebration on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8p.m. at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Brinsfield-Echols. Interment will take place at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of St. Mary's, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650.
