![]() Audrey (Marshall) Wood Hagens, 90 of White Plains, Maryland died on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at her home. She was born on September 24, 1920 in Waldorf, Maryland. Her father was the late James Gardie Marshall and her mother the late Nora Viola Butler Marshall.
Audrey attended Pomonkey Elementary through High School graduating in 1937. She also received a two-year degree from Bowie State College. For more then four decades, Audrey was a proud and committed member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Waldorf, Maryland. Her past church activities included serving on the Vestry, Cemetery Committee, Altar Guild, and the Episcopal Church Women committee (ECW). She was also on the networking committee, Episcopal Senior Ministry (ESM), planning committee for ESM senior celebrations and Parish contact for St. Paul's. Audrey truly loved her St. Paul's Piney Family. Audrey entered the Federal Government in 1944 when she joined the Bureau of Public Debt. (BPD). She later gained employment with the U.S. Coast Guard where she received numerous awards for outstanding performance. In 1980, she retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 36 year's of service. In 1963, Audrey was instrumental in the development of a Thrift Shop located at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Waldorf, Maryland created to help the needy citizens of Charles County. In 1965, she helped organize an intergenerational program designed to keep the younger generation of Charles County off the streets by offering healthy social activities. In 1981, she decided to rejoin the workforce joining Peebles Department Store where she remained for 15 years. Audrey truly enjoyed helping customers and working beside so many wonderful colleagues. In 1990, she joined the Cooperative Ministry on Aging (CMA) where she served as president for two years. The organization was very close to her heart because it supported the elderly home-bound by serving Meals-On-Wheels and providing Telephone Reassurance, Calls and Visits. While serving as president she received the Parish Senior Ministry Award for outstanding volunteerism. She always believed that providing a helping hand, sharing words of encouragement and giving a loving touch were blessings to those in need and would be returned to the giver two-fold. In 2001, Audrey was recognized as one of Maryland's Most Beautiful Persons. She was also honored by the Silent Witness Project of Charles County, a project for deceased persons due to Domestic Violence, founded by her daughter Fern Brown. She was the recipient of numerous community organization awards. Throughout her life, Audrey's hunger for helping others was demonstrated in her family and community involvement. Her unique personality, compassionate heart and contagious spirit touched literally hundreds maybe thousands of people in her lifetime. Her enthusiasm and dedication towards helping to improve the lives of elderly citizens was remarkable. No matter how difficult the task she had a smile for everyone. Audrey is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Harry Wood, son Larry Wood and daughter Marion "June" Wood Gray, brothers Orbrin, Vernon, Larry, Roscoe, Shannon, and Laurel Marshall, sisters Gloria Marshall, and Gladys Lover. Audrey is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 48 beautiful years Joseph Warren Hagens, daughter Fern Wood Brown and husband Arthur, Sr., step-daughter Joan Hagens Royal and husband Aldean, step-son James Butler and companion Hannah Barnes, son-in-law Edgar Gray, Sr., grandchildren, LaJuan Brown Lyles and husband Kirk, Sr., Trina Brown, Audrey Brown Shifflett and her companion Earl Kennedy, Arthur Brown, Jr., Edgar Gray, Jr., Paul Johnson, Jr., Tanya Johnson and her husband Kirmit, great-grandchildren, LaChante' Lyles, Kirk Lyles, Jr., Alexis Shifflett, Brigitte Gray, Jaylen Johnson, J'Lah Johnson, Tatyanna Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. Sisters, Bernice Blair, Bernette Estep, Eleanor Miles and her husband William, Alma Marshall, sisters-in-law, Myrtle, Gloria Mae "Baby Sis", Janie, Gladys (Marshall) and a special sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Liza" Stewart. She also leaves to celebrate her life a host of family, friends and St. Paul's Episcopal Church Family in hopes that they will remember her vivacious personality, witty jokes and infectious dazzling smile. Visitation and Prayer Service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Thornton Funeral Home, 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Church with the Rev. Dr. Joy A. Rose, TSSF officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery followed by a repast at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Waldorf, Maryland or Hospice of Charles County. Arrangements provided by Thornton Funeral Home. |
