John 16:33 On Friday, June 24, 2011, Carolyn Ann Thomas, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend departed her earthly life at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Carolyn Ann, affectionately known as "CAT" and sometimes as Precious Joy or Kitty Cat was born in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 1945, the second youngest child of the late John and the late Mary Estelle Matthews. She was a member of the St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head, Maryland and received her education through the Charles County School System. Cat was employed with the Federal Government for more than 31 years, before retiring from the Naval Research Lab in 1998. Cat enjoyed cooking, playing cards, playing lottery, spending time with her family and friends, and cowboy movies. Cat was also known for her rice pudding and her crush on Sonny Corinthos of General Hospital. Cat was preceded in death by brothers, William, James (Jimmy), Charles (Buzzy), Thomas (Sonny), and Harold Matthews; sisters, Nettie (Sista) Mack, Margaret Woodland, Gladys (Mae) Rolley, Dorothy (Boo) Norris, Frances Dunnington, and Joan Matthews. She leaves to cherish her memories four children, Wanda Powell, James (Wayne) Thomas, Shawn Thomas (Nikki), and Tammy Smalls (Erric); twelve grandchildren, Tamika, Shonte, Kandyce, Fanee, Eric, Erykah, Lakeisha, Sheraye, Sherell, Lil Shawn, Jake and Zach; five great-grandchildren, Kanise, Kymari, Kashaun, Nevaeh and Zyairah; one sister, Agnes Jean Smith; two sisters-in-law, Gladys and Inez Matthews; one brother-in-law, George Smith and a host of other family and friends. Viewing, 8:00am until Tribute Service 9:30am on Saturday, July 2, 2011 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640. Mass of Christian Burial, 11:00am at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 30 Mattingly Avenue, Indian Head, Maryland 20640. Interment, St. Charles Cemetery, Glymont, Maryland.
