Anna "Nanny" Elizabeth Umphries, 90, of Mechanicsville, MD, formerly of Arlington, VA, died on February 22, 2011 at Civista Medical Center, La Plata, MD.

Born on March 6, 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Frances and Anna Elizabeth Collins Jennings. Anna was a Waitress, Babysitter, and Homemaker. She moved to Southern MD so she could have horses and raise Siberian Huskies. Her enjoyments were bowling, watching gymnastics, and watching basketball and football with her grandson, and she also practiced Kung Fu.

She is predeceased by her husband, Elias "Pete" Umphries, brothers, John and Frances Jennings, and son-in-law, Lou Bishop. Survived by her children, John (Lois) Umphries, Leta Bishop, and Perry (Laura) Umphries, 7 grandchildren, Carie Ortman, Lisa Umphries, Kenneth Ross, Shoshone Taglisferi, Teena Weaver, Eric Umphries, and Chad Marshall, and 10 great-grandchildren, Gavin, Whitnee, Taelor, Joshua, Justin, Mariah, Samantha, Stephaine, Georgianna, and E.J., and half-sister, Louise (Buddy) Walker and family.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 12-2 p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD where Funeral Services will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be held at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD for family only.
