![]() Joseph Calvin May, Sr., 75, of Mechanicsville, MD, died on January 30, 2011 at Washington Hospital Center. Born on November 11, 1935 in Bedford, VA, he was the son of the late James Holcomb and Gladys Clairborn Padgett May.
Joseph retired as a Salesman for Mattingly Distributors. Prior, he worked for Burch & Wise Company, Southern MD Oil, and was Captain of the Security Force at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home when it was 1st established. He graduated in 1955 from La Plata High School. From 1958 until 1960, he served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the American Legion in Hughesville, Moose Lodge and Lion's Club in Mechanicsville which he received the Melvin Jones Award. He attended the Menden Hall of Auctioneering and had developed his own business, M&M Auctions. Mr. May did benefits auctions for Mt. Zion United Methodist church and St. Mary's County Christmas of April. Also a member of Tuesday's Men's Card club, and St. Mary's County Softball League which he was elected into the Hall of Fame. Mr. May also participated on the Maryland License Beverage Association. His enjoyments were farming, loved to play golf, and his grandchildren. Survived by his loving wife, Ann Davis Collins May, children, Joseph C. "JC" May, of Hughesville, MD, Bill and wife, Mila Collins, of Seattle, WA, Louis and wife, Kim Collins, of Charlotte Hall, MD, brothers, Roger May of, Goldsboro, NC, and Bill May of Fredericksburg, VA, grandchildren, Robb, Mark, Joey, and Maria Collins. Predeceased by a brother, James H. May, Jr. A Life Celebration will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD where Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011 with Rev. Thomas Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be: JC and Tim May, Louis and Joey Collins, Sean O'Grady, and Oscar Padgett. Honorary pallbearers will be: Richard Lacey, William R. Mattingly, William Brown, Sam Landman, George Caywood, and Jimmy Hayden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Mechanicsville Rescue Squad, PO Box 15, Mechanicsville, MD 20659 and/or Hughesville Rescue Squad, 15245 Prince Frederick Rd., Hughesville, MD 20637.
