![]() John Lynwood Sullivan Sr. of La Plata, Maryland, died on Friday, November 26, 2010, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He was 89 years old.
Born on November 6, 1921, in Marbury, Maryland, he was the son of the late Mary L. Abell Sullivan and the late Andrew B. Sullivan. A Charles County native, Mr. Sullivan graduated from Lackey High School and served in World War II as a bomber pilot stationed in Italy. He was Honorably Discharged at the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1955. Throughout his life, Mr. Sullivan worked as a farmer, a sales associate for Free State Business Machines in Waldorf, serving customers in the Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's counties, sold real estate and insurance. He was the first full-time county commissioner of Charles County in 1958 and served as president from 1954 to 1962. He helped start the countywide library system and appropiated money for the building of Charles County Community College. He later served on the Orphans Court as an elected Judge. Mr. Sullivan was a member of the La Plata United Methodist Church, the Democratic Club, the 2 N 1 Senior Club at the Clark Center and the Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sullivan was preceded in death by his son, Robert Michael Sullivan; his great granddaughter Caitlyn M. Youmans; his two sisters, Louise S. Henderson and Esther S. Fusco; his three brothers, Russell G. Sullivan, William A. Sullivan and George M. Sullivan. He is survived by his wife Helen B. Sullivan; sons, John L. Sullivan Jr and his wife Debbie, Russell A. Sullivan and his wife Pat; grandchildren Christine M. Youmans, Russell A. Sullivan Jr. and John Michael Sullivan; great grandchildren Zachary N. Youmans and Megan C. Youmans; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation on Friday, December 3, 2010 from 2PM to 4PM and from 6PM to 8PM at the Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the La Plata United Methodist Church 3 Port Tobacco Road La Plata, Maryland 20646 beginning at 1:30PM with the Reverend Bruce Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery located in Dentsville. Pallbearers are Ronnie Bowling, Fred Bowling, Jeff Changes, John M. Sine, Daryl Crown and Gary Sullivan. Honorary Pallbearers are Shelton Plumer and Larry Bowling. Memorial contributions may be made to La Plata United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2824, La Plata, MD 20646.
