Mae Helen Bennett, 63, of Scotland, MD, died September 14, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.

Born June 8, 1943 in Leonardtown, MD, she was the daughter of Guffrie Matthew Smith, Sr. and Parthenia W. Barnes Smith of Scotland, MD. Mae attended Jarboesville Carver School from grade school until graduation. After graduating Mae decided to continue her education at Bowie State University where she would spend two years in the Undergraduate program where she majored in English.On June 12, 1965 Mae married Robert S. Bennett at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Scotland, MD. The couple would eventually have four daughters together. Mae retired from the school system in June of 2006 where she spent over fifteen years educating the youth of St. Mary's County. Mae was an active member at St. Luke's United Methodist Church where she was an Usher taking great pride in leading many through the church doors. Mae also assisted with Sunday school, she was a member of the Women's Society and every summer Mae would assist with the Vacation Bible School. Mae enjoyed babysitting, shopping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mae will be deeply missed because of the love and guidance that she shared with all she met.

Mae leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband Robert Bennett, her loving daughters, Karen Lindsey of Great Mills, MD, Roberta Whigan (Kay) of Lexington Park, MD, Melinda Curtis (Elridge) of California, MD, Kimberly Bennett of Scotland, MD, her parents Guffrie Smith, Sr. and Parthenia Smith of Scotland, MD, sixteen brothers and sisters; Guffrie Smith, Jr. (Casey) of St. Leonard, MD, Marva Johnson (Reno) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Zerita Shade of St. Inigoes, MD, Alberta Smith of Forestville, MD, Orlando Smith (Donna) of Lexington, KY, Beulah Barnes of Scotland, MD, Eugene Smith (Joyce) of Dale City, VA, Desiree Berry (Paul) and Ramona Smith both of Scotland, MD, Holly Powell (Larry) of Glenarden, MD, Aaron Smith (Gloria) of Scotland, MD, Wendy Morton (Terry) and Vivian Smith of Lexington Park, MD, Shayne Smith, William Smith (Jeanne) and Cindy Smith all of Scotland, MD. Nine grandchildren; Ashley, Jerry, Jr., Nigel, Anthony, Jada, Dystiny, Elridge Jr., Demetrius and Desmond, Damont Barnes a special friend who was like a son to her and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mae was predeceased by both, her paternal and maternal grandparents, her nephew Paul "June" Johnson and a close friens and brother-in-law, William Shade, Jr.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Scotland, MD. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
