![]() Edward Michael "Mike" Breen, ATCS USN RET., age 62, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, died Thursday, August 12, 2010, after a valiant bout with cancer with his loving wife Jean and family at his side.
He was born February 17, 1948 in Long Island, New York, the son of Edward Joseph and Helen Victoria (Burns) Breen of Northport, L. I., NY. At eight years old his family moved onto a 79 acre farm in Troy, NH. There, he quickly learned the joys of hand-milking cows, seeking out chicken eggs, slopping hogs, and chasing sheep back into their pens. He attended grammar school in Troy and during his Junior year at Monadnock Regional High School, he decided to drop out of school and volunteered to serve his country in the Viet Nam war by enlisting in the Navy in March 1965. Mike qualified for Radioman "A" School and successfully graduated from the 26 week Radioman course in Bainbridge, Md. After graduation he received orders to Naval Radio Station Guam where he supported both shipboard and airborne communication. While on Guam he was promoted to RM3 and also completed his High School graduation requirements by passing the "GED" exams. His next duty assignment was to the USS Ticonderoga, CVA-14 completing two tours of Viet Nam in the Tonkin Gulf. While onboard the Ticonderoga he volunteered to fly as an "Airborne Radioman" on the E-2 aircraft and flew numerous missions over Viet Nam. At the time of his reenlistment he changed rates to become an airborne "Aviation Electronics Technician". While waiting to attend the 18 month Aviation Electronics technical training in Millington TN and Pensacola FL, he was assigned to VP-23 in Brunswick Me where he flew numerous operational missions (as a trainee) from Rota Spain. After graduation, his next tour was a Family assignment with his wife Jean to the USS Midway CV-41, home ported in Yokosuka Japan, and where as a member of VAW-115 he supported the evacuation of Viet Nam. Other assignments over his career include; Recruiting Duty where as a "Home Town" recruiter in Keene NH he was selected as Recruiter of the year for the Navy and meritoriously promoted to Chief; and operational tours with Patrol Squadrons in Spain, Bermuda, South America, and Iceland followed. During these tours he received his Bachelor's Degree in Management from Southern New Hampshire University. His last tour was with the Naval Aviation Maintenance Office (NAMO) here at Patuxent River Naval Air Station where he supported the Chief of Naval Operations for Logistics as his "Digital, Maintenance Manual liaison". He retired in Mechanicsville as an Aviation Electronics Technician Senior Chief (ATCS) in September 1990 with two Navy Achievement Medals and many other awards and commendations. After retiring from the Navy, and because of his education, military and technical experience, he was highly sought after by many High-Tech companies and choose to go to work for Xerox in their Washington D.C. Federal Business development offices. Over the next 20 years Mike would manage the Business Development operations for companies such as; Unisys Federal Group, Raytheon, BearingPoint, and L-3 Communications. But his true love, in Business Development, was in the management of the capture of large, technically complex, government with General Dynamics Information Technology at the time of his passing. His first marriage to Cathleen A. Wivo of California ended in divorce in 1972.
