Born November 7, 1909 in Newport, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Aaron Whalen and the late Mary Della Hawkins-Whalen. She was educated in Charles County Schools and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church where she was a member of the church choir. She married John Grant Thomas and through the union had six children. Later in life she married William Alfonzo Yates and through this union they had six children. Her children are George, James, Thomas, Joseph, Mary Rita, Clarice, Susie, Mary Alice, Ruth, Barbara, Betty, Joyce, step-daughter Madeline, step-son John Thomas and grandson Joseph Thomas. She also raised many other children. She worked at the Indian Head Powder Factory, the cafeteria at Bel Alton High School, Marjorie Maloney & James Rosier Bus Companies and 20 plus years at Charles County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in La Plata. Annie was a very dedicated and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. She showed much compassion and consideration to anyone whom she came in contact with. She always told it like it was and didn't hold anything back. She worked until age 89 and at age 92 she still had an active driver's license and drove senior companions in her community to and from work. Her motto was "don't sit down, keep right on moving" and those who knew her, knew she did just that. Her favorite saying was "deed child, I'm teapotting." In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Thomas; daughters Clarice, Mary Rita, Betty and Ruth; sistes Ollie and Ruth; brothers Willis and Hubert. She is survived by her sons George and his wife Margaret, James, Joseph and his wife Wynita, and John; daughters Susie, Mary Alice, Barbara, Joyce and her husband Gary and Madeline; grandson Joseph and his wife Rosetta; sister Odell; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Viewing from 11AM to 12Noon with Mass beginning at 12Noon on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at St. Peter's Catholic Church Waldorf, MD. Interment St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery Newport, MD.
