Ira Elwin Norfolk, 71, of White Plains, MD, died April 29, 2010, at his residence with Hospice.

Mr. Norfolk died peacefully at home from complications of cancer. He grew up in South East, Washington, DC, attended Anacostia High School and graduated in 1957. He began working at the District Building in DC as a draftsman in 1957. Worked as a designer at Palmer & Baker Engineers from 1960 until 1970. Went to DMJM (Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall) Architects and Engineers where he worked as a civil engineer from 1970 until retirement in 2000. Worked in their Baltimore office where he helped with the planning, design and construction of the Baltimore Metro. He also worked on several DC Metro projects including the College Park and Branch Avenue Metro Stations.

Born January 1, 1939, in Lothian, MD, he was the son of the late Bernard Alexander Norfolk and the late Ira Moore Norfolk.

Predeceased his parents.

Survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Rodgers Norfolk; daughters, Katherine Norfolk of Charlottesville, VA and Lara Castle and husband James of Newburg, MD; brother, Bernard Wayne Norfolk and wife Shirley of Fishersville, VA; sister, Cheryl Holland of Seaford, DE.

Memorial Service is planned for a later date.
