Joseph Guilio Tuono, 90, of Nanjemoy, MD, formerly of Bryans Road, MD, died December 25, 2009, at Civista Medical Center, La Plata, MD.
Mr. Tuono was educated in the local school system and attended Manhattan College with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Physics. In 1942 he accepted a position with the Navy Department protecting ships against magnetic mines. After two years this was followed by service in the United States Army Air Corps as a B-24 Gunner for an additional two years. After the war he obtained a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park. Upon completing the requirements for his degree he returned to the Navy Department as an explosives Chemist. Over forty years of service, he worked on the development of the naval missiles. After his retirement in 1990, he lived in Bryans Road and Nanjemoy, MD, commenting on the passing scene, playing chess and bridge and working crosswords. Born August 17, 1919, in Ossinging, NY, he was the son of the late Guilio Tuono and the late Mary Zema Tuono. Predeceased by his parents; wife, Jean Marcom Tuono. Survived by his son, Joseph Edward Tuono of Bryans Road, MD; daughters, Lisa Jo Tuono of Nanjemoy, MD; Kristina Maria Tuono of Bryans Road, MD. Also survived by three grandchildren, Terra L. Tuono of Silver Spring, MD; Gaetano Tuono of Annapolis, MD; and Tamara Tuono of Englewood, FL. Funeral Service will be held January 8, 2009, 2PM, at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Rev. Steve Davis will officiate. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to the Worship Center, P.O. Box 177, Bryans Road, MD 20616.
