Lola Mae Shearer Svane, 90, of North Beach, MD, formerly of La Plata and Pennsylvania died November 21, 2009, at Solomons Nursing Center, Solomons, MD.

Mrs. Svane was raised in Adams County, PA on a farm. She was one of eight children, six girls and two boys. At the outbreak of WWII, she enrolled in the first female machinists school in Hershey, PA. Two of her lath bench projects were sent to President Roosevelt and could be seen on his desk in newsreel clips. From November 1944 she worked at Hickman Air Force Base, Hawaii, making airplane parts until after the war. She was honored as a "Rosie the Rivetor" in 2004.

In 1945, she married Jan J. Svane, a Pearl Harbor survivor, and had two sons. She lived in Hawai until 1970. She also lived in Greer's Ferry, AK and Dillsburg, PA and moved to La Plata in 2001. She survived a brain tumor operation and the tornado that hit La Plata in 2002. She moved to North Beach in 2004. She was an active and independent woman and always had a great smile and personality. She was a great artist and loved oil painting, quilting, crocheting, and sewing. She loved to cook and bake. She enjoyed gardening and had a "green thumb". She had a great love for the outdoors and animals.

Born October 13, 1919, in Fayetteville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Amos Shearer and the late Mae Galbraith Shearer.

Predeceased by her parents.

Survived by her sons, Hans and his wife Linda Svane of Waldorf, MD; Eric and his wife Madeleine Svane of North Beach, MD; sister, Peg Blevins of East Berlin, PA; five grandchildren, eight great-grand children and seven nieces.

A gathering will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2009, from 1PM until time of service at 2PM at Raymond Funeral Chapel.

Rev. Mark Roberson will officiate.

Interment will be private.
