John Edward Loehle, 66, of La Plata, died October 16, 2009, at Civista Hospital, La Plata, MD.

Mr. Loehle was born October 29, 1942, in Louisville, KY, to Joseph and Catherine Peterson Loehle. He attended Trinity High School and graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in Engineering. He spent many years living in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, but called Maryland home since 1989.

Mr. Loehle served in the United States Air Force and finished his military career as the Base Civil Engineer for the Indiana Air National Guard, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Not wanting to sever his military ties, he continued his affiliation as a civilian government employee at the Air National Guard Readiness Center, Andrews Air Force Base, MD.

He was a Licensed Professional Engineer and was recently inducted into the Maryland Society of Accountants. Never one to be idle, Mr. Loehle volunteered for many years with the Christmas in April organization. He was also an avid stamp and coin collector and Washington Redskins fan.

He was preceded in death by his father Joseph and younger brother Peter. In addition to his mother Catherine, he is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Michelle Francis of IN; and step children, Jamie and her husband Bob Baggstrom of MD; Sherri Smith of MD; Bill Reffeitt and his wife Patty of IN; and Scott Reffeitt and his wife Jennifer of IN; brothers, David and his wife Lucy of GA; Larry and his wife Dusty of KY; sisters, Mary Jo Loehle of IN; Carol and her husband Charlie Campbell of KY; Sharon and her husband Hal Waidmann of SC; Cathy and her husband Mark Burkhead of KY; many nieces and nephews and 14 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, with prayers and words of remembrance at 7 p.m. at Raymond Funeral Home in La Plata. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. October 22, at the Sacred Heart Church, La Plata. Fr. Ron Potts will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Pallbearers will be David Loehle, Bob Baggstrom, Charlie Campbell and Sunny Mui.
