Roland William "Pop" Weckesser, 73, of Great Mills, MD died December 21, 2006 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous brief battle with cancer.

Born April 20, 1933 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Harry and Mathilda Weckesser.

He was a beloved friend to many within the community and affectionately was known to one and all as "Pop Weckesser". He enjoyed staying active and participating in social activities within the community. He played on the St. Mary's County Senior Men's softball league, the Senior Citizen Thursday bowling league, and the Saturday Texas Hold'em tournaments to help support local causes. He was an avid golfer and hit the links at several of the local greens. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and camping with his children and grandchildren during the summer months.

He is survived by his three loving children, Terri Lynn Welling of Great Mills, MD, Thomas Arnold Weckesser of Acworth, GA, and Michele Shakra of Salisbury, MD, two sons-in-law, Mark Welling and Sebastian Shakra, one daughter-in-law, Norma Ray Weckesser, twelve grandchildren; Joshua Burrell, Jeremiah Burton, Christopher Burton, Samantha Welling, Laura Leigh Welling, Mary April Terry, Rachael Weckesser, Bryan Weckesser, Roland Weckesser, Nicole Mankad, Zachary Shakra, and Jessica Ragsdale, eight great-grandchildren; Lauren Burrell, Brandon Burton, Kyle Burton, Nathan Burton, Mark Burton, Carson Weckesser, Anthony Merk, and Jamie Lee Sheriff, seven siblings; Kenny Weckesser, Louis Weckesser, Champ Weckesser, Marie Kindle, Thelma Abbey, Elizabeth Hartsock, and Patsy Rosenburg, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and a special young man whom he considered to be one of his own and a loving grandson, Kevin Steckowski.

Mr. Weckesser was preceded in death by the love of his life and mother of his children, Gloria Lenick Weckesser Reese, and four siblings, George Weckesser, Robert Weckesser, Midge Weckesser, and Tommy Weckesser.

The family will receive friends for a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 13, 2007 from 1- 3:00 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel, Leonardtown, MD.
