James Owen "Captain Jim" Drummond of Cobb Island, Maryland, passed away on September 24, 2009. He left his mark with a meaningful life of service to others.
Born on December 8, 1933, in Washington, D.C; he was the son of the late Owen M. and Lucy L. Drummond. He served his country with pride in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean War. He proudly wore his Korean War Veteran cap daily. After his military service, he began a successful career with AT&T (Bell System) concluding with his retirement in 1984. At that time, a new chapter of his life began as he became a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain. He was exceptionally proud of his new endeavor, Captain Jim's Charter Boat Service. If prized fish were in the waters, you could count on Captain Jim knowing how to catch them. His philanthropic interests were vast. He earned the title of "Outstanding Democrat" during his service to the 4th and 5th District Democratic Club; at one point serving as Vice President. During two terms on the Democratic Central Committee, Jim was a tireless worker for the Party. In addition, he previously served as President of United Way of Charles County, Vice President of the Board of Directors for Spring Dell Center, Chairman of the Fin Fish Advisory Committee with the Potomac River Fisheries Commission, member of the Striped Bass Advisory Committee for the Atlantic Marine Fisheries Commission, member of the Cobb Island Citizens Association, Vice Chairman of Cobb Island Citizens On Patrol (COPS), member of the American Legion and member of Christ Episcopal Church, Wayside. If being a Washington Redskins fan counted as a volunteer job; he truly excelled at that, as well. He clearly set an example for all through his selfless contribution to our community. Captain Jim was a loving family man and is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Mary Lou. Their union brought together a large wonderful family of six children including Susan Bowen, Nancy Rice and her husband Bob, Daniel Drummond, Lawrence McDonnell and his wife Brenda, Margaret Pryor and her husband Willie, Stephen McDonnell and his wife Carla, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his loyal sister, Carol Argentine and his niece, Renee Gaines. He will be missed, as he was deeply loved by all. He has bestowed upon many, the gift of fond memories. A celebration of Captain Jim's life will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Christ Episcopal Church, Wayside beginning at 11A.M. with Reverend Connie Jensen officiating. Interment will be private, as he wished. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Spring Dell Center, Inc., 6040 Radio Station Road, La Plata, MD. 20646.
