Gordon Augustine O'Neill, Jr. died September 6, 2009, at Civista Medical Center, after a long illness, surrounded by family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 11 from 4-8PM at his home, Mount Republican in Newburg, MD. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 12, at 2PM at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Issue, MD. The son of Gordon Augustine O'Neill and Virginia Bohan O'Neill, he was born November 15, 1925, in New York City. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sally O'Neill Turner, as well as his brother-in-law, Frank Keech Turner. He attended Iona Prep in New Rochelle until moving to Washington, DC. Gordon attended Woodrow Wilson High School, graduating in 1944 and was an All-City football player there. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1947, spending much of that time in Sardinia as an air traffic controller and earning the rank of sergeant before returning to civilian life. He attended Washington and Lee University and Georgetown University, graduating in 1951. He married Bridget Masin O'Neill in 1957. He is survived by his wife and their six children; Eileen and her husband Jeff Early of Madison, VA; Gordon and his wife Nancy O'Neill, III, of Newburg, MD; Sally and her husband Clay Bailey of Nashville, TN; Molly O'Neill of Newburg, MD; Joe and his wife Ginger O'Neill of Charlotte Hall, MD; and Peter O'Neill of Kansas City, MO. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Sarah Early, Meg Early, Gordon O'Neill, IV, Alex O'Neill, Anna O'Neill, Bridget Bailey, Ferriss Bailey, Charlie Bailey and Masin Drury. He is also survived by beloved sister-in-law Mary Ellen Gregory, beloved friend Hildegard Winters and numerous nieces and nephews. After stints as a buyer for Garfinkel's and at Remington Rand in the District, Gordon moved to Charles County, Maryland, and co-founded Alger & O'Neill Insurance Agency in 1961. An active citizen, businessman and friend of Charles county for over 40 years, Gordon served on many boards and committees. He served for many years on the board of directors of Community Bank of Tri-County. He was president of the board of Archbishop Neale School, the Charles County Chamber of Commerce, Hawthorne Country Club, and the Port Tobacco Players. As an actor for the Port Tobacco Players, Gordon entertained audiences in numerous roles, from Captain von Trapp to the King in the King and I, Zorba in Zorba, Don Quiode in Man from LaMancha, Emile DeBeck in South Pacific, Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Fagan in Oliver, On Golden Pond with his wife Bridget. Whether on stage, at work, or in his home, Gordon exhibited a love of life, a sense of humility, and a desire to give of himself to his family, his many friends, and even strangers. He will be missed by all.
