It is with great sadness that the family of Mildred Gene Lewis Jameson, age 75 of LaPlata, MD, announces her passing on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Millie was born on January 8, 1934, in Mount Hope, WV, to the late Robert Milton and the late Ruth Amanda Lewis. Upon her birth, Dr. Gene Hodges, who delivered her, and her father, changed her name from Millicent Jane to Mildred Gene. Dr. Hodges kept the spelling of his own name for her middle name.

Millie is survived by her loving husband, Robert A. "Cheese" Jameson, a retired Charles County Sheriff's Officer. The two were married in 1970 and resided, for many years, in White Plains, MD with their four children.

Millie was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, the Republican Party and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Police. She volunteered many years as an Election Judge for the Charles County Board of Elections. She loved to spend time with her family and was often eager to host family gatherings at her house. She was an avid reader, chef and baker and loved to play games and travel. She and Cheese would often take trips from Maine to Florida and Maryland to California, seeing all they could in between.

She started her career in 1953 as the Secretary to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., before leaving in 1955 to become a full time stay-at-home mom. She returned to work in 1963 as the manager of the very well-known Stardust Inn Restaurant in Waldorf, MD. She remained a fixture there until 1970. At that time she became the Assistant to the Dietitian at Physicians Memorial Hospital in LaPlata, MD. In 1972 she left the hospital to become a Clerk at the Circuit Court of Charles County. She retired from the Circuit Court in 1986 before starting her second career as a Real Estate Agent in 1987. Millie finally took some time for herself in 1995 when she left real estate to enjoy more time with her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Milton and Ruth Amanda Lewis and her sons, William Lee and Robert Charles Hicks.

She is will lovingly remembered by her husband of almost 39 years, Robert "Cheese" Jameson of La Plata, MD; daughter, Elizabeth Gardiner and son-in-law, Charles Gardiner of Port Tobacco, MD; son, Bradley Hicks of Salem, VA. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Andrea and Christopher Owens of Bristow, VA; Brian Hicks of Lexington Park, MD; William Hicks of Roanoke, VA; Mary Gardiner of Alexandria, VA; Benjamin and Marie Hicks of Salem, VA; Jessica Hicks of Roanoke, VA; and Charles Gardiner, Jr. of Port Tobacco, MD. She is survived by many brothers and sisters, Samuel and Ruth Lewis of Gilbert, AZ; Ruth and Michael Wyvill of Upper Marlboro, MD, Larry and Pam Lewis of Creed, CO; Marvin and Carole Lewis of La Plata, MD; and Teddy and Debbie Lewis of Ontario, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

Viewing and prayers will be held at Raymond Funeral Home in LaPlata, MD, on Thursday, July 9, 2009, from 2:00-4:00 P.M. and 6:00-8:00 P.M. The funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Plata, MD, on Friday, July 10, 2009, at 10:30 A.M. Private internment will take place at Cheltenham Veteran's Cemetery in Upper Marlboro, MD.
