Katherine (Kay) Stoll of Solomons, MD, passed away at Asbury-Solomons on June 2, 2009 after a long and very adventuresome ninety year life. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in August 1918. She attended Smith College and spent a year in France at Dijon and the Sorbonne in 1939. There she developed a passionate interest in travel and in the French language. She married Donald C. Stoll in 1941 and had three children, Larry, David, and Peter Stoll. Along with being a home maker she worked for over fifteen years as a High School French teacher at Solon High School in Solon, Ohio where she influenced many students to take a life-long interest in French language and culture.

Although Kay Stoll had many varied interests, her true passions were family, music, photography, world travel, and extensive hiking. Her children were all introduced to many forms of music at an early age and all developed the ear, and one, the talent, to be serious musicians. After her husband's retirement from Standard Oil of Ohio, Kay and Don moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina. They shared an enthusiasm for mountain hiking and both hiked all of the significant peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

After Don passed away in1985 Kay continued to hike in a variety of locales ranging from Spain (the Pyrenees), New Zealand, Africa and South America. Kay's crowning accomplishment, which made the front page of the Hendersonville, North Carolina newspaper, was to successfully hike up Mount Kilimanjaro (19,000 foot volcanic peak in Africa) at age 70. Although Kay managed to combine hiking on all of her vacations, she traveled to France and other European locales many times, to South Africa, to the Sudan, to Egypt, to China and to South America. On each trip she brought along her trusty camera and took many photographs documenting her journeys of exploration. She gave frequent slide show talks at Asbury about her travels and has a very extensive photographic library of her many trips.

In 1997 Kay Stoll moved to Asbury and was an active participant in many activities there including bird watching, hiking and attending and presenting photographic slide shows. As her health declined, she transitioned to assisted living and finally to the nursing section at Asbury.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Sharp of Cleveland Heights, Ohio and by her husband, Donald Stoll.

She is survived by her three sons and their families: Larry and Linda Stoll of Mechanicsville, Maryland and their two sons, Kevin and Brian of Baltimore, MD, David and Arlene Stoll of Lexington, Kentucky and their children, Erika and Derek, and Peter and Beth Stoll of Albuquerque, New Mexico and their, children Rebecca and Virginia. She also has two great grandchildren, Emily and Anne, born to Derek and his wife Desiree.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the Asbury-Solomons Health Care Center, 11609 Asbury Circle, Solomons, MD 20688.

While the family requests that no flowers be sent, donations in Kay's honor to Médicins san Frontières (Doctors without Borders USA) http://doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/ would be welcome.

Arrangements by the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, MD.
