William "Bill" Cashin, 95, of Chaptico, Maryland passed away in the Hospice of St. Mary's in Callaway, Maryland on May 9, 2026. Born in Albany, New York in 1931 to William E Cashin II and Eva Cashin, spending much of his childhood in Troy. He received his Bachelors, Master's and Doctoral degrees from Catholic University of America.
Bill dedicated his career to improving the quality of Higher Education, working in College Try and Academic Planning and Evaluation at the University of Delaware. He moved his family to Manhattan Kansas in 1975, working for Kansas State University as the Director for the Center for Faculty Development and Evaluation. While there, he wrote / co-wrote dozens of papers for the IDEA Center on the improvement of faculty evaluation and the IDEA student ratings system, as well as providing chapters for various textbooks on the improvement of teaching in higher education well into his retirement. In 1987 he was an American Psychological Association G. Stanley Hall Lecturer (APA Distinguished Scholar Lectures for Teaching), and in 2012 received the McKeachie Career Achievement Award from the American Educational Research Association. Prior to pursuing his career in academia, he attended seminary and considered becoming a Franciscan Friar. A lifelong reader and learner, he enjoyed mystery novels, military and naval history, and world religions. He maintained a list of what he read, noting the date and giving them a letter grade. Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Ryan Cashin, his sons, David and wife Patricia, Daniel, and his daughter Ann and her husband Stephen. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Caitlin, John, and Patrick. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Cashin, and his sister, Patricia Reilly.
