Sheila Robertson Smith, born January 4, 1945, in Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully in her home in La Plata, Maryland surrounded by those that loved her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Philip F. Smith; her mother, Emelyn F. Smith; her brother, Bradford Smith; and her dear cousin, Winnie. She is survived by her brother, Gregory Smith; cousins Mike and Caroline Croft, and Susan Croft; along with many treasured friends who became family through the years.

Sheila attended the University of Miami and went on to build a dedicated career as a hematology technician. She worked at Duke University Medical Center and later at Anne Arundel Medical Center, where she was respected for her skill and commitment to patient care until her retirement in 1993.

Sheila lived a life rooted in generosity and connection. A devoted philanthropist, she gave quietly but meaningfully, always finding ways to support the people and places she loved. She was a longtime member of the Charles County Garden Club, Charles County Historical Society, Smallwood Foundation and the Restoration Society of Port Tobacco, where her presence, dedication, and enthusiasm left a lasting mark.

Known affectionately as the unofficial historian of the Port Tobacco Courthouse, Sheila brought history to life for all who visited. As a longtime docent, she welcomed guests from across the country with warmth, humor, and a remarkable depth of knowledge. She had a gift for storytelling—never just sharing facts but creating moments that made the past feel alive and personal.

Sheila had a special love for her poodles over the years—Rory, Phin, and Kip—caring for them as family. They brought her great joy and companionship, and she spoke of them often with affection and pride.

Sheila had a sharp wit, a warm heart, and a way of making everyone feel included and remembered. Whether engaging in lively conversation, sharing her talents, or simply spending time with friends, she brought joy and authenticity to every interaction. Her friendships were deep and lasting, and she valued them as one of life's greatest treasures.

The family will receive friends on Saturday April 11, 2026 at the Christ Church (112 Charles St. LaPlata, MD 20646) from 10 am until service time at 11am. Interment to follow at the Mt. Rest Cemetery (Charles St. LaPlata, MD 20646).
