It is with great sadness that I share the passing of my mother, Ann Hahne Rose.
Mom was born on December 29, 1941, the second daughter of Annie and Max Hahne, Ellis Island immigrants from Germany. Growing up, she was a competitive tomboy and an overachiever. Her overachieving spirit led her to graduate from Hunter College with a degree in Mathematics at the young age of 19. She loved to tell stories of teaching high school math to students who were just a year or two younger than she was. Mom's thirst for knowledge compelled her to earn a master's degree in psychology from Purdue University and to go on to complete her doctorate in Medical Epidemiology at the University of Texas. Her work as an epidemiologist brought us to Washington, where she worked at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment and then at the Department of Health and Human Services in the Reagan administration, taking on the AIDS health crisis. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to found ViCro, a consulting firm that assisted pharmaceutical companies in seeking FDA approval for drug trials. My family will miss her dearly. She had a unique way of making us feel special and loved yet always keeping us on our toes. She was never one to shy away from a controversial conversation, and she loved a good political debate. We are left to wonder who is going to stir the proverbial pot at our gatherings. She lived life with her own unique and special style. There was never an ordinary occasion with her; she insisted on elevating every event with her sense of elegance. In her final days, she insisted that I get her clear plastic cups to drink from, "not those tacky Styrofoam ones." Mom leaves behind me, Julie-Anne, her only child, and my husband, Bill Hayes; two grandchildren, Nicholas George and Vanessa George; Nicholas' significant other, Nicole Faye, and their son, Rowan George. We will take care of her dear four-legged companion, Winston. In addition, Mom was blessed with so many wonderful friends, each of whom she cherished. She valued every friendship and the special times spent together. Soon after becoming a grandmother, a role she adored, she was named "Nanya." And Nanya she became to all. It is a made-up word out of the mouth of a toddler, but it embodies her whole spirit of love, spunk, caring, and endless surprises. May the spirit and essence of Nanya live on in all of us. Never shy away from a good time, live life to the fullest, and tell those you love how much they mean to you. All services will be private. |
