Mederic Henry Chaput passed away peacefully on Sunday February 22, 2026, at the age of 99.
Mederic was born on October 20, 1926, in Langdon, North Dakota. He grew up on the family farm and later moved to Florida, where he met and married the love of his life, Blanche. After the birth of their daughter, Laura, the couple settled on a small farm in Newburg Maryland where they spent most of their lives together. After Blanche's passing in 2015, Mederic moved to Frederick Maryland to live with his daughter and her family. Mederic was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Known for his strong work ethic, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to a neighbor. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, visiting with friends, and a good game of checkers. He was especially famous for his vegetable garden, particularly his tomatoes, which he generously shared with friends and neighbors throughout Newburg. A lifelong Catholic with deep and abiding faith, Mederic was a devoted member of Holy Ghost Church in Issue and later St. Katherine Drexel in Frederick. Mederic was very proud of his family and heritage. The son of a French-Canadian father, French was spoken at home until the children began school. Although his siblings and extended family lived far away, he maintained close relationships with regular phone calls and visits for special occasions. Despite living most of his life in Maryland, he always considered North Dakota his true home. Mederic shared a special bond with his grandsons Chris, Eric and Tyler Busch. During the eight years he lived with Laura's family after Blanche's death, he quickly became "one of the boys", delighting in teasing, joking and occasionally instigating a little mischief. Even in his later years, he formed meaningful friendships in Frederick with neighbors, fellow parishioners, and other seniors at Daybreak Adult Day Services. Mederic spent the final two years of his life at Maryland Manor Assisted living, where he cherished his friendship with his roommate Joe and the compassionate care of his devoted caregivers (especially Dee and Kiran). Despite declining health, he never lost his sense of humor, enjoyed visiting with friends, and remained proud of the fact that he could still defeat his grandsons in checkers. Mederic was preceded in death by his beloved wife Blanche; stepson Robert Collins; parents Mederic and Laura Chaput; four brothers (Sylveo, Thomas, George and Wilbert Chaput) and five sisters (Eva Moos, Leona Johnson, Annette Prince, Hilda Wilhelmi and Marie Everson). He is survived by his daughter Laura Busch (Jeff); grandsons Christopher, Eric and Tyler Busch, Kerry, Thomas and Christopher Collins; and numerous nieces and nephews. A viewing and funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Issue MD. The viewing will begin at 10:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Catholic Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Daybreak Adult Day Services, 7819 Rocky Springs Rd, Frederick MD 21702. |
