Joseph Gregory Abell (Gregory) passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, February 10, 2026. Gregory had a long struggle with kidney disease. He was only 66 years old.

Gregory was born on August 20, 1959, in Leonardtown, MD to the late John B. Abell II and Barbara Ann Abell. In addition to his parents, Gregory is predeceased by his brother Tom who passed on the same day and month, 1983. Gregory was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County, Leonardtown MD where he grew up on the family farm with five brothers and two sisters.

Gregory graduated from Chopticon High School, Morganza, MD in 1978. He often spoke of his favorite subject which was Electronics. Gregory was known for reminiscing about his younger days spending time with his beloved family. He often told many stories about time spent with family including his many aunts, uncles, and cousins. It was amazing how he remembered so many events and conversations with people in such detail. Gregory's favorite hobbies were playing softball as a young teenager and fishing.

Gregory looked forward to holidays and home cooking, especially stuffed ham. These were very special to him, including celebrations of his birthday.

As the years passed, Gregory also enjoyed his growing family with nieces and nephews. Gregory loved country music and most of all he loved and a had passion for the Redskins, later named the "Washington Commanders". Gregory never missed a game. He collected many tee shirts, hats, jackets, and blankets. The Commanders' items were a big hit at Christmas time.

Gregory loved his family and was kind to everyone he met. Most of all, over the years, the local medical community was so kind in caring for him. If he was wearing a Commander's shirt, that would be part of a conversation.

Gregory is survived by his siblings, Beverly Abell, John M. Abell, Charles Vincent Abell, William (Billy) Abell, Robert (Bobby) Abell, and Barbara Jean (Jeannie) Norris. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Michelle, Sara, Becca, and Brittney (great niece), nephew Woody, Cameron and Gage (great nephews) and Alexander (great/great nephew).
