George Russell Thompson, 89, of Hollywood, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on December 13, 2025. Born on September 9, 1936, on the family farm in Avenue, MD, he was the son of the late Thomas Bertrand Thompson, Sr. and Ann Louise Russell Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife, Franny, whom he married on August 8, 1959, at St. John's Church, Hollywood, MD, and his two children, Kris Ann Marsh (Scott) and Glenn Andrew (Jennifer). He is also survived by four grandchildren, Ashley Reardon (Sean), Andrea Begens (Eric), Jeff Mattingly (Kira), and Jessica Stosser (Devon), two great-grandchildren, Breagan Reardon and Gatlin Reardon. George was predeceased by one great-grandchild, Maverick Glenn Begens.
George is survived by his sibling, Thomas (Billy) Thompson (Alice Ann), of Mechanicsville MD. He was predeceased by Sr. Mary Martha Thompson, Harriet Cuel, Johnny Thompson, Theresa Mills, Dot Reichard, Robert "Butch" Thompson, and Joan Victoria Thompson.

Upon graduating from Margaret Brent High School in 1954, he served in the Air Force from 1954-1958. After that, he worked at National Airport specializing in aircraft electrical maintenance.

George began his 38-year career at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in 1963. He started as an aircraft electrician and was promoted to Electrical Equipment Inspector in two years. His career earned him a reputation throughout the aerospace community as perhaps the most knowledgeable person in the field of aircraft electrical and electronic installations. This earned him a promotion to team leader, traveling all over the United States to contractors' facilities to perform inspections. After retiring in 1992, he was employed by Eagle Systems in the same position until 2000 when back trouble sidelined him.

Starting his volunteer fire department career in his teens with the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department, he later became a member of the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department in 1964, serving as president from 1981-82. He held positions of Chief Engineer and Assistant Engineer, earned the President's Award three times, and was inducted into the SMVFA Hall of Fame in 1991. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0221 in Avenue and of the Wicomico Senior Blitz Golf Club .

George was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His hobbies included golfing and tending his lawn on his John Deere. He was also an avid antique car enthusiast and a Ravens fan. He will truly be missed.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with prayers recited at 4:00 PM, at the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, Hollywood, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM, in St. John's Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD, with Father Ray Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Mattingly, Mike Burdette, Donnie Johnson, Kenny Johnson, Tony Norris, and Mike Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Marsh, Sean Reardon, Eric Begens, Jeff Mattingly, and Devon Stosser.
