![]() John E. Warrington, 77, of Swan Point, MD, died May 2, 2009, at Washington Hospital Center.
Following a tour with the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict he worked as a reporter/editor with the Waynesboro, VA News-Virginian and his hometown newspaper, the Nashua, NH Telegraph. His work at the Telegraph caught the attention of Styles Bridges, senior ranking Republican in the United States Senate who hired him as Executive Assistant where he remained until the Senator's death. Mr. Warrington then served as Special Assistant to Senator Kenneth B. Keating (R-NY) before accepting appointment as Deputy Director of the Federal City Council, an association of business and professional leaders dedicated to the betterment of the nation's capital. His primary assignment was to secure Congressional authorization and funding for the Washington Metro. Following the successful passage of the bill, he joined the skeleton staff of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority as special assistant to the general manager, later creating and managing the industry's first Office of Marketing and finally serving as Auditor General from which position he retired in 1994. He was selected for the Jackson Graham Award, WMATA's highest honor. During this period he also chaired a group of transit officials from across the country that established the American Public Transportation Association, the industry's voice in North America. The last of seven children of immigrant parents, Mr. Warrington was an avid golfer, a singer and entertainer and an accomplished writer, having written an historical novel and collaborated on a biography of Senator Bridges. Born October 25, 1931, in Nashua, NH, he was the son of the late Leslie Leon Warrington and the late Mary Agnes O'Sullivan. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Claudette L. Cote Warrington of Swan Point, MD; children, Kathleen Ann Evans of Warrenton, VA; John Leslie Warrington of Davidsonville, MD; David William Warrington of Upper Marlboro, MD; and Mary Agnes Stewart of Davidsonville, MD; a sister, Clara F. Rukas of Sugarland, TX; and a brother, Paul W. Warrington of Nashua, NH. Also survived by eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends received on Friday, May 8, 2009, from 10 AM until a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 15848 Rock Point Road, Issue, MD 20645 at 11 AM. There will be a private memorial service and interment at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Fr. David Beaubien will officiate.
