Dr. Herbert Charles Winnik, PhD
August 19, 1938 - November 4, 2025 Dr. Herbert Charles Winnik, PhD., 87, of Solomons, MD (formerly of Leonardtown, MD) passed away on November 4, 2025 at Calvert Health Medical Center in Prince Frederick, MD with family at his side. Born on August 19, 1938, in New Britain, CT, he was the son of the late, Joseph Winnik and Frances Zappler Winnik and sister, the late Gilda Burzycki. He is also preceded in death by his former wife, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Farrell. Herb was born and raised in New Britain, CT and moved to West Hartford, CT for high school, graduating in 1956 from Hall High School. On June 5, 1960 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in Physics, followed by his Master's degree from Yale University in History of Science in 1961. On June 10, 1968, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Doctorate in Intellectual History. He began his teaching career at Virginia PolyTechnic Institute from 1965 to 1969 before relocating to St. Mary's County in August of 1969 where he spent his career as a History Professor at St. Mary's College. Herb spent many years building the history curriculum and developing specific courses, including the History of Science, Science in Our Time, Women's History and Black History, retiring in May 1999. After retiring he moved to Asbury, Solomons, MD. He is a founding member of Beth Israel Synagogue in Lexington Park, MD. He was very active in the community in St. Mary's County; he really enjoyed being the foreman of the grand jury. He is survived by his wife, S. Culliver Brockman of Solomons, MD; his daughters, Natasha Robin Winnik of Tucson, AZ and Aliza Mayel Robin of Gaithersburg, MD; his step-children, Lisa K. Farrell and David L. Farrell; and extended family and friends. A Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 7, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Graveside Service will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 22020 Chancellors Run Road, Great Mills, MD 20634. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Feed St. Mary's, a community supported Food Bank for St. Mary's County, P.O.
