Barbara Jean "Sugar" Marshall, of La Plata, Maryland, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Born on November 29, 1939, in Hughesville, Maryland, to the late Leopold and Dorothy Istvan.

She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Bryantown, Maryland, graduating in 1957and shortly thereafter, met her loving husband, William A. Marshall, Jr., marrying in April 1958.

Sugar was known for her warm heart and witty humor. She spent many enjoyable years volunteering in Charles County Public Schools at J.C. Parks Elementary, where she was known and loved as Grandma Marshall by students and staff. She loved spending time with her large family, especially the grandchildren. She enjoyed reading a good book, gambling with her sisters, and taking care of her variety of houseplants, especially her African Violets. Sugar was an avid Redskins fan, never wanting to miss a game on TV.

Sugar is survived by her children, Steven Marshall (Linda), Jeanne Back (Larry), Patricia Boswell (Joe), Jeffrey Marshall (Julie), and Michael Marshall (Dawn); 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Dorothy A. Gibson, Rose M. McPherson, and Shirley L. Alvarado.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Marshall, Jr.; sisters Mary T. Istvan and Elizabeth M. Therres.

On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the family will receive friends for the visitation from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with prayers at 7:00 pm at Brinsfield Funeral Home, located at 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A mass will be held the following day at 10:00 am at St Mary's Catholic Church, 13715 Notre Dame Pl, Bryantown, MD 20617. Interment will follow after the service in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Hughesville Fire/EMS Department, and the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
